Tanzania’s weather is as diverse as its landscapes, ranging from the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro to the sun-kissed beaches of Zanzibar. Understanding the country’s climate is essential for planning the best time to visit, whether your goal is a safari adventure, mountain trekking, or a relaxing beach holiday.

General Climate:
Tanzania has a tropical climate with two main seasons: wet and dry. The dry seasons—from late June to October and in January–February—are ideal for wildlife viewing and trekking. During these months, animals gather near water sources, making game drives particularly rewarding. The wet seasons include the long rains (March–May) and the short rains (November–early December). While some roads may be muddy and wildlife slightly dispersed, the wet seasons bring lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Regional Weather:

  • Northern Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro): Experiences cooler temperatures at higher altitudes, especially on Kilimanjaro, while the plains remain warm. Dry months from June to October and January–February are ideal.

  • Southern Tanzania (Ruaha, Selous/Nyerere, Mikumi): Hotter and drier overall, with the dry season from June to October offering excellent safari conditions.

  • Coastal Areas and Islands (Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia): Warm and humid year-round, with dry periods from June to October and January–February perfect for beach holidays, snorkeling, and diving.

Tips for Travelers:

  • Always pack light, breathable clothing for the day and warmer layers for cooler mornings, evenings, and high-altitude treks.

  • Bring rain gear if traveling during the wet seasons to stay comfortable.

  • Sun protection—hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses—is essential year-round.

  • Check regional forecasts, as conditions can vary greatly between the coast, savannah, and highlands.

By understanding Tanzania’s weather patterns, you can plan your trip for optimal comfort and adventure, ensuring the best experience whether you’re on safari, climbing mountains, or enjoying the beaches of the Indian Ocean.
